During a heart attack or myocardial infarction a portion of the heart muscle is robbed of oxygen due to a blockage of one or more arteries within the heart.  This blockage leads to a decrease in oxygenated blood to all or a potion of the heart muscle depending on where the blockage is at.  This leads to death of that portion of heart muscle that is affected and can possibly lead to cardiac arrest if left untreated.  This is why it is important to activate 911 as soon as possible so treatment can be started to attempt to minimize further damage to the heart. "Time is muscle". The longer you wait the more muscle is destroyed.
